Following his “Reflection” exhibition in 2012, renowned Chinese designer Han Jiaying will open his new solo exhibition on Oct. 28 at the He Xiangning Art Museum in Nanshan District.

Curated by Cui Cancan, the exhibition, titled “Han Jiaying’s Design A-Z,” will showcase Han’s works spanning 30 years, including graphic design, installations and photography. His new works from the past decade will be spotlighted, and his continuous practice with characters, objects and forms will also be featured through a large number of manuscripts.

The exhibition follows the structure of a “dictionary” to explore the trajectory of his creations. Based on his creative perspectives, the works are divided into the categories of “characters,” “words” and “phrases,” reflecting his thoughts and expressions in the visual arts and exploring the origins of design.

Recreating Chinese characters is the core of Han’s design. During his school days, he began using Chinese characters to express his creative style. His early posters systematically presented his evolving perspectives on Chinese characters, from strokes to structures, characters to passages, and surfaces to spaces. This exploration forms the basis for his unique contemporary expression of Chinese characters.

Han is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and a visiting professor at the City Design School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Born in Tianjin in 1961, Han studied at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in 1982 and taught at the Fashion Design Department of the Northwest Institute of Textile Science and Technology (now Xi’an Polytechnic University) in 1986.

He has won the prestigious Design for Asia Awards’ Grand Award Gold Medal and was named one of Forbes’ 2015 China’s Most Influential Designers. He is dedicated to designing experiments with graphics and text, and his works are collected by international art institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, and the Museum für Gestaltung Zurich.

Curator Cui, who has curated more than 130 exhibitions and activities since 2012, said this is a unique design exhibition where visitors can not only admire Han’s diverse works at specially designed exhibition halls but also learn about his thinking and his creation journey.
