Musical theater and international recording superstar Sarah Brightman will lead a lavish new production of “Sunset Boulevard,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece, to Shenzhen Poly Theater this May.
Webber’s beloved musical epic, based on Billy Wilder’s 1950 film noir classic of the same name, premiered in London’s West End in July 1993. The American production opened in Los Angeles in December of the same year and was later reworked for Broadway, where it debuted in November 1994.
Set in Hollywood in 1949, the story follows forgotten silent film star Norma Desmond, who longs to return to the silver screen. Holed up in her decaying mansion on Sunset Boulevard, Desmond lures handsome, struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis into her orbit, hoping he will pen a screenplay for her grand comeback. However, as their relationship turns intimate and Desmond’s delusions deepen, their story spirals toward a tragic and violent end.
With her soul-stirring voice, Brightman will portray Desmond’s obsession and downfall, tearing through the façade of Hollywood’s gilded age amidst the cracks wrought, delivering a performance of inevitable tragedy and grandeur.
Audiences will be treated to iconic songs such as “With One Look,” “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” and “The Perfect Year.” These timeless classics, which perfectly complement the storyline and evoke deep emotional connections, have cemented their place in the annals of musical theater.
Shenzhen will be the final stop of the production’s China tour, following performances in Beijing, Shanghai, and Wuhan.
