Local music enthusiasts filled the B10 Live venue in the OCT-LOFT, Nanshan District, every night from Oct. 25 to 27 to enjoy enchanting performances at the 11th OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival. An eclectic lineup of 20 musicians from eight countries brought their unique artistry to the stage, followed by late-night improvised gigs at the Old Heaven Bookstore that fostered an atmosphere of spontaneity and synergy.

Manou Gallo made her Asia debut with a dazzling performance on the opening night. Equally comfortable in jazz, funk, and Afro-pop, the bassist from Côte d’Ivoire captivated Shenzhen with her impressive groove. She was followed by U.S. drummer William Hooker and guitarist John King, who showcased their avant-garde approach to jazz through experimental soundscapes, delivering a lush auditory experience.

On the second night, Danish trombone player Maria Bertel and Chinese flutist and saxophonist Lao Dan introduced a fresh take on jazz, skillfully merging contemporary techniques with traditional flavors. Japanese virtuoso Eiichi Hayashi then offered an eclectic range of styles in his quartet’s performance.

The final night featured a trio consisting of Portuguese trumpet player Luis Vicente, drummer Vasco Trilla, and U.K. double bassist John Edwards, who showcased the nuances of free jazz by navigating through intricate sound tapestries in their energetic set. U.S. saxophonist Zoh Amba’s performance blended avant-garde jazz with elements of noise and devotional hymns, further expanding the festival’s sonic palette.

In addition to the gigs, festival-goers also enjoyed a vinyl market, Edwards’ engaging lecture on improvised music, and a documentary screening, all of which enriched the experience and fostered deeper connections between the musicians and the audience.
