Shenzheners will have a rare chance to watch Polish film master Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Dekalog,” “The Double Life of Veronique,” and the “Three Colors” trilogy at Broadway Cinematheque and Palace Cinema in Nanshan District from June 20 to July 3.
All the movies will be shown in their original languages with Chinese and English subtitles.
Kieślowski (1941-1996) was a prominent figure in directing documentaries, feature films, and TV works that delved into social and moral themes of his era.
His monumental work, “Dekalog” (1989), co-created with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, offers a series inspired by the Ten Commandments. Each episode explores at least one commandment without explicit naming, encouraging audiences to discern the moral and ethical dilemmas entwined within the narrative. This series stands as a contemporary cinematic masterpiece.

“The Double Life of Veronique” (1991) achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim. This evocative and atmospheric piece explores the connection between a French girl and a Polish girl, sharing not just a name but also a birthday, heart ailment, and a mystic sense of each other’s existence. Irene Jacob takes on dual roles in this film, also co-penned by Piesiewicz.
Continuing their collaboration, Kieślowski and Piesiewicz created the “Three Colors” trilogy — a reflection of the French flag’s colors: “Blue” (1993), “White” (1994), and “Red” (1994). These films delve into the themes of liberty, equality, and fraternity, intended to be appreciated as a cohesive whole. A central theme, the fragility of human relationships, unfolds from the solitary awakening in “Blue,” extends through the dark humor of “White,” before culminating in the symbolic epiphany of “Red.” Kieślowski was nominated for an Academy Award for best director for “Red.”
