Nanshan offers free screening for liver cancer

With no symptoms in its early stages, liver cancer is known as a "silent killer." To improve survival rates, Nanshan People's Hospital has partnered with Roche to offer free screening to local residents, along with follow-up care to help patients better manage the disease.

As of April 12, nearly 2,800 high-risk individuals have been screened, leading to the detection of seven cases of early-stage liver cancer. All have successfully undergone surgery and have recovered.

The free screening is a joint project of Nanshan's health authorities and Roche.

Eligible permanent residents aged 18 to 75 — including those with chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis, or a first-degree family history of liver cancer — only need a blood test and a B-mode ultrasound at their nearest community health center to complete the screening and receive a liver cancer risk assessment. If abnormalities are detected, patients will be referred to a hospital for further treatment.

Eligible patients can also receive free tests at Nanshan People's Hospital, including complete serological testing (AFP, PIVKA-II, liver function, etc.) and ultrasound exams. Based on the results, low-risk residents receive regular follow-ups from family doctors, while medium-to-high-risk residents receive regular re-examinations and multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment from the hospital's specialist team, if necessary.

"The process has been continuously simplified to make it convenient for residents," said Chen Zhong of the Infectious Disease Department at Nanshan People's Hospital. "Early detection and early treatment are the most responsible choices for one's own health."

Lin Zexun from Tianxia Community Health Center explained that the centers are primarily responsible for health education, promotion, and screening for high-risk populations in the community. To encourage greater participation, the centers offer health lectures, free consultation sessions, and brochures to educate the public about the disease.

Li Linze from the Nanshan Medical Group Headquarters noted that through publicity campaigns and free screening services, residents' awareness of liver cancer prevention and their health management skills have significantly improved. So far, over 200 high-risk individuals have been identified and offered follow-up health management.

Roche, a global pioneer in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, has provided digital solutions and a comprehensive management platform to support the project. Ji Ritai, Head of Roche Digital Healthcare Innovation China, said the company aims to build an integrated, standardized whole-process disease management model through this joint project.

Nanshan health authorities said they will continue to optimize the screening process, expand coverage, and improve the follow-up system.
