The 15th National Games of the People’s Republic of China is scheduled to open on Nov. 9. A contingent of 43 athletes from Nanshan District is making its mark, having already secured an impressive early medal tally.
As of the evening of Nov. 3, these athletes have collectively won two gold, two silver, and one bronze medals across diving and team handball events, showcasing the district’s strength in competitive sports.
The success began in the diving pool at the Guangzhou Olympic Sports Center. On the evening of Nov. 2, the Guangdong women’s diving team successfully defended its title, clinching the gold medal in the team event—the first diving gold of the Games.
Nanshan athlete Ouyang Yu played a crucial role in this victory with her performance in the women's synchronized 3m springboard, part of the team competition. In that specific synchronized event, Ouyang and her partner Mei Yingxin secured a third-place finish, earning a bronze medal and laying a solid foundation for the team's overall gold medal win.
This year's National Games is Ouyang Yu's third appearance at the premier sporting event. She is set to continue her campaign in the women's synchronized 3m springboard final on Nov. 7.
The diving success continued on Nov. 3, when Nanshan's Yan Siyu put in a steady performance to help the Guangdong men's team secure the gold medal in the men's team diving event. Yan also earned an individual silver medal for his performance in the men's 3m springboard segment of the team competition.
Beyond the pool, Nanshan athletes have also excelled in team sports. On Sept. 19, the Guangdong women's handball team made history by winning the silver medal at the finals held in Shantou, their best-ever result at the National Games. The team's core lineup featured seven key players from Nanshan—Gu Tianshu, Li Xiaoqing, Wei Nana, and others—whose solid foundational skills and seamless coordination were instrumental in the team's journey to the final.
The 43 athletes from Nanshan are competing in 17 different events at the Games, including swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, sport climbing, basketball, and handball. Their strong start highlights the district's role as a significant contributor to the Guangdong delegation at this major national multi-sport event.
