A total of 20,000 runners took to the streets of Nanshan District on Dec. 15 to participate in the Nanshan Half Marathon, either for the joy of running or to push their limits.

At 7:30 a.m., amidst a refreshing morning chill ideal for achieving personal records, the participants commenced their race from Shenzhen Talent Park.

They traversed a T-shaped route, mapped out by Shahe West Road and Shennan Boulevard, winding through notable landmarks such as the Dasha River Ecological Corridor, Shenzhen MixC World, Shenzhen University, Nantou Ancient Town, and the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center.

“I think the marathon is well organized,” remarked Zhu Hua, an employee at Nanshan People’s Hospital, during an interview. “There are ample supply stations, dedicated medical staff, and helpful volunteers throughout the route, ensuring a supportive environment for all runners.”

As a dedicated runner, Zhu was thrilled to achieve a new personal best during the half marathon.

Runners hit the road for the 2024 Nanshan Half Marathon.

“The marathon run was a fantastic experience,” Zhu shared. “The course was scenic, the weather was perfect for running, and there was a palpable joy among the participants. Running in a group can really push your limits, allowing you to surpass your usual training pace.”

Wang Zhiyu, general manager of Shenzhen Metro Property Co. Ltd., came to run with a group from his firm.

“Marathons are about challenging oneself and embodying a spirit of endurance,” Wang emphasized. “This kind of persistence is essential in both our professional and personal endeavors, particularly when it comes to teamwork.”

Jiang Anjing, a professional runner, finished the race in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

“My result, placing 14th, isn’t ideal. I’ve run many marathons this year and wasn’t quite in the zone,” Jiang reflected. “However, I felt very relaxed after the race.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Nanshan Half Marathon, initiated in 2015, was the first district-organized marathon in the city to receive certification from the Chinese Athletics Association. It earned the Road Race Label from World Athletics, the global governing body for track and field athletics, earlier this year.
