Nanshan District recently held a policy briefing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking a specialized government designation, the latest in a series of efforts to bolster local industry.

The forum, focused on applications for the classification of SMEs that use sophisticated technologies to produce novel and unique products, aimed to demystify the process for companies. Experts outlined key application points, procedures and common issues, followed by a question-and-answer session where business representatives raised specific concerns about the process.

Many attendees praised the session as timely and helpful, providing a clear, actionable guide to navigate the complex application, according to organizers.

Nanshan, a core area for industrial innovation in Shenzhen, has prioritized cultivating such high-tech firms. The district employs a multi-faceted strategy that includes tiered mentoring, funding support, help securing industrial space and assistance with employee housing.

So far, these efforts have yielded significant results. Official data shows Nanshan has nurtured 4,598 innovative SMEs, 3,177 SMEs that use sophisticated technologies to produce novel and unique products, and 394 national-level "little giants" — specialized, high-end and innovation-driven SMEs that provide distinctive products or services. The district's "little giants" count is among the highest in Shenzhen.

The Nanshan District Industry and Information Technology Bureau has organized 23 themed events for these firms this year alone, designed to help businesses secure the certification and the policy benefits that come with it.
