Nanshan Museum 南山博物馆

Officially opened to the public in January 2018, the museum covers an area of approximately 19,000 square meters, with a total floor space of about 36,000 square meters.

The museum features seven exhibition halls, including three permanent exhibition halls that tell the story of the district. This unrolls in three parts: Ancient Nanshan, Modern Nanshan, and the History of Nanshan's Reform and Opening-up.

The other four halls host 6 to 10 non-permanent exhibitions each year. Past highlights included the "Dunhuang Splendors: Culture and Art Exhibition of Mogao Grottoes," the "Arts of the Great Ocean" exhibition featuring 171 artifacts originating from Oceania, and various themed exhibitions on ancient Chinese porcelain and history.

Nantou Ancient Town Museum 南头古城博物馆

Officially opened to the public in September 2004, it is a National Level-III Museum, with its name inscribed by Jin Yong, a famous Chinese martial arts novelist.

The main exhibition tells the story of Shenzhen's urban development spanning over 1,700 years, tracing its origins back to 331 A.D. Through a collection of more than 300 cultural relics, it illustrates Shenzhen's history and its deep cultural connections with Hong Kong and Macao.

The building blends a former Soviet style with local architectural traditions. The museum is small, covering a total area of 1,600 square meters with a building area of approximately 630 square meters.

In addition to the main hall, the museum has five feature exhibition halls, which are respectively located in the Xin’an Tobacco Museum, Dongguan Guild Hall, Xin’an County Government Office, Baode Temple and Wen Tianxiang Memorial Temple.

Tianhou Museum天后博物馆

Also known as the Chiwan Mazu Temple, this is a thematic folk museum located in the Chiwan area in Nanshan District. Nestled at the foot of Xiaonanshan Mountain and facing the Lingding Sea estuary, it is dedicated to preserving and studying the culture of Tianhou (Mazu), the Chinese goddess of the sea.

The museum's history can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It was originally named Tianfei Temple and gained significant prominence during the Ming Dynasty. The temple is notably connected to the famous voyages of Zheng He, who visited and had it restored in the early 15th century. At its peak, it was the largest and most influential Tianhou temple in the coastal areas of South China during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The original temple suffered damage in the 1960s but was restored in the 1990s. In 1997, it was officially established as the Tianhou Museum. Now it’s managed by Nanshan Museum.

The museum hosts significant annual events, such as the ocean sacrifice ceremony and the birthday of Mazu held on the 23rd day of the third lunar month.

Shekou Museum of China’s Reform and Opening-up 中国改革开放蛇口博物馆

The Shekou Museum of China's Reform and Opening-up is China's first history museum dedicated to the story of the country's reform and opening-up. Situated on the third floor of the Sea World Culture and Arts Center, the museum officially opened on Dec. 26, 2017.

With exhibits presented in five chapters, the museum guides visitors through the 40-year transformation of the Shekou Industrial Zone.

With an industrial aesthetic that pays homage to Shekou's early development of attracting investment and building factories, the museum brings history to life through a diverse collection. Visitors can view precious historical archives, photographs, and items from the 1980s donated by the public. Notable exhibits include a model of Shekou's float from the 1984 National Day parade, which famously bore the slogan "Time Is Money, Efficiency Is Life," and a circular screen showing a video titled "From Sea World to Belt and Road."
