Established in June 2002, Taoyuan Subdistrict is the last subdistrict set up in the northeast of Nanshan District, covering a total area of 35 square kilometers. It reaches Tanglang Mountain in the east, Xili Reservoir and Dasha River in the west, Beihuan Boulevard in the south, and borders Yangtai Mountain in the north. With a total population of nearly 300,000, of whom 104,000 are registered (accounting for 34.7percent), it has jurisdiction over 12 communities: Longguang, Zhuguang, Pingshan, Tanglang, Fuguang, Changyuan, Longhui, Longlian, the University Town, Fengjing, Longzhu and Taoyuan. Six ofthe communities are rural urbanization communities and six are pure residential communities.

Taoyuan Subdistrict has the regional advantage of “four concentrations.”

The first “concentration” is that the subdistrict is home to a cluster of universities and scientific research institutions, including Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Southern University of Science and Technology, Lihu Campus of Shenzhen University, Georgia Tech Shenzhen Institute, Tianjin University, and Guangdong Xin’an Vocational and Technical College. The Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Super Computing Center in Shenzhen are also located in Taoyuan Subdistrict. Nearly half of the colleges and universities in Shenzhen are situated in the subdistrict.

The second “concentration” involves high-tech enterprises. There are a number of star enterprises such as UBTECH, Sangfor, and PHOGRAIN. In addition, it includes many hi-tech industrial parks with complete facilities and great vitality such as Nanshan i Park, Nanshan Zhigu, Nanshan Yungu, and Shenzhen University Town Entrepreneurship Park, all of which reflect the enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship the subdistrict inspires.

The third is the concentration of high-caliber talents. At present, in Taoyuan Subdistrict, there are about 7,330 high-level talents and expats as well as 30 academicians, accounting for 88.2 percent of the total number in Nanshan District.

Forth, there is a concentration of landscape resources. Taoyuan enjoys a beautiful ecological environment with Tanglang Mountain standing in the hinterland, Dasha River flowing through the parks and Changlingpi Reservoir, all of which offer fascinating scenery. In addition to these natural landscapes, there are also the Wubeiling Ruins of the Shang Dynasty, which was rated as one of the “Top 10 New Archaeological Discoveries in China” in 2001, and Changyuan Village, which used to be a major base of the Dongjiang Guerilla Column and was dubbed as the “little Yan’an” in Shenzhen.
