Nanshan Subdistrict is situated in the southwest of Nanshan District, bordering Yuehai Subdistrict to the east via Nanhai Boulevard, the coastline of Qianhai to the west, Zhaoshang Subdistrict to the south via Mawan Coast-Big Nanshan Mountain Ridge Line-Nanhai Boulevard, and Nantou Subdistrict to the north via Xuefu Road. It covers a total area of 28.8 square kilometers, with 14 communities that include Nanshan, Nanyuan and Beitou within the jurisdiction and five urban villages of Xiangnan, Beitou, Nanyuan, Nanshan, and Nanguang. As of 2018, there was, under the jurisdiction, a permanent population of 224,000, of which there were 3,727 members of the Communist Party of China attached to 127 Party organizations at all levels, 438 Communist Youth League members affiliated to 38 league organizations, and 77,974 members of 227 trade union organizations.

The number of preschool education institutions is the largest in Shenzhen. Steady progress has been made in education in Nanshan Subdistrict, which boasts a strong educational system. Within the jurisdiction, there are 49 institutions of preschool education and nine-year compulsory education, of which 36 kindergartens account for up to 73.5 percent, followed by 10 primary schools, occupying 20.4 percent, and one senior high school. Among them, 17 are public schools and 32 private schools. In terms of enrollment, there are 30,819 students, of which 15,145 are in elementary schools, occupying 49.1 percent, followed by 10,348 in kindergartens, accounting for 33.6 percent, and the rest are senior high school students, occupying 6.1 percent.

The medical and health system is dominated by community health service centers. Given the fact that there are no comprehensive medical institutions like hospitals and outpatient departments at present, Nanshan Subdistrict has constructed 10 community health service centers to facilitate providing community residents with access to medical care for minor, chronic, and other diseases.

There is a wide variety of cultural and sports facilities. The subdistrict proactively promotes the development of cultural and sports undertakings and build cultural and sports centers including cultural and sports stations and comprehensive cultural activity venues, as well as relatively complete supporting facilities, enriching the daily lives of the masses. There is a cultural and sports station and 14 comprehensive cultural activity venues, with a total floor area of 11,912.06 square meters, of which comprehensive cultural activity venues have a floor area of 10,112.06 square meters, accounting for 84.9 percent.

There is a fully functional commercial complex.The jurisdiction boasts Raffles City, tucked away at the intersection of Nanhai Boulevard, the landmark landscape boulevard in Shenzhen, and Chuangye Road, connecting the two future financial and commercial centers of Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Financial Service Cooperation Zone and Houhai Financial Headquarters Center Zone. With an area of 53,700 square meters and a total floor area of 390,000 square meters, Raffles City includes various types of large comprehensive shopping malls, integrating with the adjoining city park of nearly 90,000 square meters.

Sound social and economic development

The permanent population in the subdistrict has been growing steadily. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the permanent population in Nanshan Subdistrict rose from 193,200 in 2015 to 224,000 in 2018. The proportion of the subdistrict’s permanent population in the district has remained stable at 15 percent, with migrant workers as the mainstay of the permanent population.

The economic development has progrossed steadily. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, under the leadership of the CPC Nanshan District Committee and District Government, Nanshan Subdistrict has made steady progress in the overall economic development, gaining good impetus. In 2018, the total amount of major economic indicators of Nanshan Subdistrict was at an upper-middle level in the district, among which such indicators as key service industry operating income and sales of wholesale and retail ranked among the top three. Seen from the growth rate of main economic indicators, the growth rates of industrial value added, key service industry operating income, and sales of wholesale and retail exceeded the average level of the district.

The business service industry dominates. As of 2019, more than 8,000 companies had clustered together in Nanshan Subdistrict, including nine listed companies as well as 733 enterprises above designated size. Seen from the industry distribution of enterprises above designated size, the business service industry has 619 companies, the largest number accounting for 84.4 percent, forming an industrial development system dominated by the business service industry.
