UBTECH, a leading Chinese robotics company headquartered in Nanshan District, announced on Sept. 20 that it will collaborate with The University of Hong Kong (HKU) to conduct joint research on Human-like Visual Perception for Service Robots.
A team, led by Professor Xu Dong from HKU’s Department of Computer Science, will conduct joint research with UBTECH in fields such as point cloud compression and unsampling, 3D object detection, 3D action recognition, model compression, and 3D visual grounding.
UBTECH will provide an algorithm testing platform for both parties to conduct relevant technology testing in order to accelerate the application of human-like visual perception algorithms and technologies in the robotics industry, ultimately optimizing the accuracy of robots’ visual perception.
According to UBTECH, 3D point clouds can compensate for the disadvantages of pure visual sensing schemes to some extent, help improve the visual recognition accuracy of humanoid robots, and expand robotic adaptability in more scenarios.
The company has been invited to establish subsidiaries and research institutes in Hong Kong, with the goal of attracting more global talent, as part of the special administrative region’s systematic strategic planning for innovation and technology development in Hong Kong.
Humanoid robots are iconic products of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. According to UBTECH, it has received approval for establishment of the Guangdong Provincial Humanoid Robot Manufacturing Innovation Center.
