The operator of the Nantou Helicopter Yard will receive 600 million yuan (US$86.96 million) in compensation to relocate the yard to Zhangkengjing General Aviation Airport in Longhua District, according to a recent meeting of Nanshan District Urban Rejuvenation Bureau.
The district reached an agreement with the yard operator, CITIC Offshore Helicopter Cooperation, which will receive a piece of land covering around 12 square kilometers for the relocation of the yard and to make way for the development of the Nantou area.
The helicopter yard was built in 1983 mainly to service staff commuting to work on the offshore oil rigs in the South China Sea.
As the city developed over the decades, the area has been left underdeveloped due to height restrictions. After relocation, the Liuxiandong Base and Nanshan Intelligent Park will be re-planned and upgraded.
A new airport for general aviation covering 291,990 square meters will be built in Guanlan, Longhua District. It will be enclosed by Pinglong Road, Qingping Expressway, Jihe Expressway and Banlan Boulevard, according to a plan released by the city’s land and planning authority.
General aviation refers to civil aviation operations other than scheduled air services. General aviation covers a range of flight modes, from gliders and powered parachutes to corporate business jets.
General aviation is one of the two wings of the civil aviation industry, and plays an irreplaceable role in national economic and social construction. It covers a large range of activities, both commercial and noncommercial, including flying clubs, flight training, agricultural aviation and light aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.
